Learn how to prune apple trees with June Tainsh, executive director of Helmsley Walled Garden.
Here at Helmsley we have over 100 different apple trees including plenty of heritage varieties. They have been trained in a range of forms from espalier to stepover and cordon to free standing.
Learn the techniques of apple pruning including:
- identifying the three Ds – dead, diseased and dying wood
- ways of training apple trees into different forms
- when to prune
- pruning for fruiting spurs
- how much wood to remove
Dress in warm clothes as you’ll be outside for the majority of the workshop. Please bring you own secateurs if you have them. Workshop cost includes coffee and cake.
