Flora and Thread comes to Helmsley Walled Garden

Flora and Thread: A Tent for Joseph Banks, Sydney Parkinson and Daniel Solander is an exhibition celebrating the plant hunting of Sir Joseph Banks, the drawing of Sydney Parkinson and the taxonomic work of Daniel Solander when they accompanied Captain Cook on the Endeavour to Australia. Calling at ports in South America, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia, Banks and his team discovered a wealth of botanical treasures along the way.
Some of the plants discovered on the voyage have been recreated by embroiderers and textile artists in Whitby to create the artwork on the tent. Accompanied by a set of interpretive panels, the exhibition tells the story of the voyage and the plants discovered.
The exhibition has been loaned to the garden for the whole of October by The Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby and we gratefully acknowledge their generosity.
