Apple Tree Pruning with Chris Cooper

Join Chris Cooper, Garden Manager at Helmsley Walled Garden, to learn how to prune apple trees.
At Helmsley, we have over 100 different apple trees, including many heritage varieties. They have been trained in various forms such as espalier, stepover, cordon, and free standing.

In this workshop, you will learn essential apple pruning techniques, including:
– Identifying the three Ds: dead, diseased, and dying wood
– Training apple trees into different forms
– Knowing when to prune
– Pruning for fruiting spurs
– Determining how much wood to remove
The workshop will start at 9.30am and run until 12.30pm on Tuesday the 8th of September, with a mid-morning break for coffee/tea and cake (included). Please dress warmly, as the majority of the workshop will take place outdoors. If you have your own secateurs, kindly bring them along.
Car parking is in the Cleveland Way Carpark (YO62 5AZ), just a few minutes’ walk from the garden.
This workshop is limited to 8 places.
